Blue Cypress

| 2024

‘Blue Cypress’ Connects the symbolic power of the cypress tree (Sarv in Persian , سرو) with the stories of Ferdowsi’s Shahnameh, demonstrating how cultural symbols transcend time and offer insights that resonate with modern experiences.

Ferdowsi’s Shahnameh, a monumental 10th-century epic, chronicles Persia’s mythical and historical past while imparting invaluable lessons about resilience, courage, and the quest for identity—themes that remain deeply relevant today. The narratives of legendary heroes overcoming immense odds reflect the struggles of individuals and communities grappling with displacement, migration, and the search for belonging.

The cypress symbolizes resilience, freedom, and eternity. Unlike other trees that bend or fall, the cypress stands tall and unwavering. These qualities, celebrated in Persian literature, especially the Shahnameh, represent strength in the face of adversity and a deep connection to one’s roots and cultural identity. The cypress symbolizes the ability to embrace one’s roots while adapting to new environments. It encourages us to remain grounded, drawing upon our heritage as a source of resilience

I used fabric and poetic inscriptions to create a bridge between the past and present. The large-scale fabric pieces, moving with the wind, remind us of life’s ever-changing nature while emphasizing the importance of remaining rooted in our identity.

This piece also features self-portraits that represent my personal journey, introspection, and the duality of my identity as both an artist and an observer. By placing my likeness alongside the cypress, I create a dialogue between the individual and the universal, inviting viewers to see themselves in the narrative of resilience and transformation. This intertwining of self and symbol highlights our shared human experience and how our personal stories are woven into the fabric of cultural heritage.

The cypress tree encourages us to stay resilient and rooted in our heritage as we face life’s challenges, while also inspiring us to approach our journey with strength, hope, and a deep sense of belonging.
